Mary prepares for her adult education classes, hiring a new teacher, but it becomes clear that Mrs Harris's traditional techniques don't work with the adult learners. Liza receives a surprise visit from Captain Edward Blackwood, and it's clear there's a spark between them, much to Adella's annoyance. Goaded by Imelda, Adella becomes increasingly resentful and plays a cruel prank on Liza with a fake séance.
