Electricity arrives at Hardacre Hall, and it's not the only sign of changing times as Callum helps Mary buy several bikes - an exciting new mode of transport. Sam convinces Mary that the family business should expand by converting their fish shops to general stores. And when a newly promoted Maggie messes up a food order, Mary decides to set up adult education classes. Ma strikes up an unexpected friendship with George. Harry announces that he wants to abandon education. Liza, weary after a summer plagued by unsuitable suitors and fortune hunters, has a chance encounter with a mysterious soldier. Emma is horrified to learn that her mother Lady Imelda is paying them a visit. When Emma hosts a garden party, Imelda insists the Hardacres are invited. Mary reluctantly attends with the family, and Imelda appears perfectly charming. But Imelda later reveals to Emma her true feelings about the Hardacres.
