Our story takes place on the day of Beth’s twenty-third birthday. Growing up, Beth found herself caught between two warring parents. She thinks back to the day when she was twelve years old and overheard an argument that revealed to her that the man she has always thought as ‘papa’, Billy Winters, is not her real father. She listens as an angry Billy swears that Beth, no kin to him, will never inherit his land or his family’s money. Beth thinks back to earlier that summer. Beth is visiting her mother’s grave when Ward shows up having been away for some months. Beth confirms her feelings for him and they make an arrangement to meet. By this stage the attraction between the two is undeniable. At dawn, Beth and Ward row out on the lough heading for Corvey Island. Ward reveals he can’t swim. Returning to the present Beth reflects on what is planned for that night. The hour of stealing is fast approaching, can she can hold her nerve. Does she love Ward, hate Billy? Is she making a colossal mistake? Can she do it?
