Plot

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a 2013 adventure-fantasy film based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien (the man behind the Lord of the Rings novel). This is the second movie of the 3-part film series that stars Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom. The movie follows the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen ) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), on an epic quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. The Hobbit 2 was directed by Peter Jackson, the director of District 9, Lord of the Rings film series and the first Hobbit movie. The movie comes right after The Hobbit: An Expected Journey and will be followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again which is set to be released next year.
